On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”02:00″] Five year anniversary of SYR CrossFit, now F13 Performance.

[spp-timestamp time=”04:00″] Coming up on almost three years of the podcast as an anniversary reflection.

[spp-timestamp time=”05:00″] I did a Facebook Live the other day to celebrate that my Fuel Foundations non-profit was approved.

[spp-timestamp time=”11:35″] New anniversaries like Scott’s collapsed lung and now his wedding.

[spp-timestamp time=”12:37″] Fourth to the fifth anniversary of Dr. Megan working with the swim program of Emmaus High School.

[spp-timestamp time=”13:00″] A reflection on Dr. Megan’s third year in the Poconos for a Summer Camp Run.

[spp-timestamp time=”22:00″] Fat-adapted training celebrations and reflection by Scott.

[spp-timestamp time=”28:00″] Being aware of reminding ourselves to pause and celebrate these anniversaries and look back. Where was your training two years ago vs your awareness of that today? You might not call it an anniversary, but rather call it a reflection.

[spp-timestamp time=”30:57″] Final Words

Final Words:

Final Thoughts are, give yourself a permission to pause and that’s not just in looking back and goalsetting you know. Obviously, a really big part of what we’ve been talking about is to also give yourself a chance to pause and just slow down. Recognize the influence of culture and our particular culture that pushes. Look at how much your self-worth linked to what you’re doing in a day. It’s okay to pause, it’s okay to go to the beach, it’s okay to take time to not only look back but to just give yourself time to rejuvenate, refresh, and slow down. This is so you can sustain being productive, or sustain your work, or sustain your level of whatever type of productivity longer.

Final Words:

I think it’s just knowing what type of calendar relationship you have with your calendar. Are you a person that can schedule in advance and that then holds you accountable? Plus does it actually allow these things to happen? Or are you more spontaneous individual? No matter if you are trying to schedule things out, or if you are that more spontaneous side, look for those opportunities. Whether it’s an annual event that happens each year, or whether it’s an ebb and flow of your career cycle, or maybe it’s mine used to be which was this like one specific time of being on vacation that it was always that mental check in with myself but either way having that check in to just celebrate give yourself the credit for what you have accomplished in that year, or two years, three years, whatever it might be, because America and our culture we’re always going to have that push forward. And so purchasing ourselves to take a look in the rearview mirror sometimes see what we’ve done and then readjust the focus forward.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”10:00″] I don’t even know where I’ll be living this time next year. So I think to have those moments, whether it’s an anniversary, or you just choose an event that you kind of do annually, give yourself the opportunity to look back. To be able to say wow, this time last year, look at what I accomplished!

[spp-timestamp time=”11:20″] It can just be reflecting back on something. Doing that is really important. Often we go through the day to day to day, and you’re checking boxes and doing the things that we don’t realize how much we actually accomplish?

[spp-timestamp time=”14:30″] I think in everybody’s profession, there probably is something similar, not necessarily identical. That might be some natural breaking points of giving our selves the ability and permission to pause and look back.

[spp-timestamp time=”15:50″] First of all, it’s making that a priority. It has to be on your radar initially. Going in with an intention, six months from now, I’m going to check in with myself on this or in a year from now.

[spp-timestamp time=”18:45″] It’s tough because there have been times that I have tried to pre-register for races to get the early bird discount. Then something with work comes up and I’m like crap.

[spp-timestamp time=”20:00″] What just happened to me with a 5k in April, I couldn’t get rid of the race entry bib. People get injured, people have crazy lives. I was trying to just get it moved on within a running group I’m in but either people were already registered or otherwise.

[spp-timestamp time=”20:30″] It’s just one of those things where it just reinforced why I choose to not schedule things out that far in advance.

[spp-timestamp time=”22:00″] Final Words

We dig deeper into the Endurance Psychology Mindset, the Iron Cowboy, the Free Solo documentary, and more:

Megan has been working with many school sports teams on mindset preparation. Today we dig into the swimming team(s) and much more. She talks to our audience regularly, about many high-value topics such as health, fitness, mindset, and Sports Psychology. Specializing as a Sports Psychologist, Megan brings a wealth of mindset psychology and a whole lot more to our show. Listen in while we catch up with Dr. Megan Cannon Ph.D.!

Quote: He who has their why to live for can bear almost any how!

– James Lawrence aka The Iron Cowboy

Today’s shorter podcast is a Part II, following our newer short form with Dr. Megan Cannon. She’s gotten busier, as have I, so we now are recording back to back episodes to be paired off of each other. Our new mindset pump format is trying to stay around 30 minutes or less. Let’s see how you, the listeners, like the performance and knowledge we can cram into these newer 30-minute episodes!

Top 3 Hot Points:

Endurance Mindset Psychology

The Power of Your Why

Powerful Mindset Shifts

[spp-tweet tweet=”He who has their WHY to live for can bear almost any how! @ironcowboyjames You Too Can LIVETHEFUEL! #ironcowboy @drmegancannon “]

Final Words:

I don’t think we can beat anything outside of the iron cowboys quote of “He who has their why to live for can bear almost any how”. That, I think encompasses not only the pushing through the pain, the power of the mind, the mental preparation and just the power of giving that attention to mindset and that preparation. That component of things whether it’s pushing through a big business project, making a big decision, or pushing through pain at a race or in a practice. If you have identified why and “what am I doing this for”, you really can withstand so much more. It’s just the power of that mind motivation.

Final Words:

I think it’s just starting to pay attention to your mental game plan. That doesn’t start the day of trying to do an Ironman, I’m not going to just go do that tomorrow, right? I’m going to train and I’m going to prepare. As long as you’re doing the physical preparation, think about the mental preparation and not only those things from what we’ve discussed of sleep and making those unknowns, known. Even on that day of competing or whatever business you are doing, have that mental game plan and preparation there as well.

[spp-timestamp time=”05:00″] Swimming training, triathlons, and swim angels.

[spp-timestamp time=”10:00″] So there’s the 25 meter for short course, and then the long course is 50 meters. So you’re missing the flip turn and you’re missing that ability to push off the wall.

[spp-timestamp time=”15:30″] There’s the Parkland Swimming Team vs the Parkland area Swim Club team, two different things. Then there is the Nazareth teams, they have a high school program but then they also have a club program as well.

[spp-timestamp time=”22:00″] So having a consistent sleep cycle going into the competition was part one that I did. That is a part of the official fancy healthy sleep terminology, your circadian rhythm.

[spp-timestamp time=”30:00″] So here’s a perfect example in the CrossFit world. So I know for me, if I look at that clock, and it’s one of those workouts, I said to my teammates, I do not want to know what the time is. I even said to the judge, please do not let me know what the time is.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”00:56″] The struggle is real, and the entrepreneurial spirit people.

[spp-timestamp time=”01:35″] Shout out to rob a SYR CrossFit.

[spp-timestamp time=”01:54″] Scott’s four-legged family which is becoming a three legged family member. So shout out to Calvin The Coonhound in surgery recovery today. He finished his surgery last night, has become a tripod so I wasn’t sure what your thoughts were around that because we’re going to kind of tie this into the show here about injury and athletic recovery.

[spp-timestamp time=”03:00″] Shoutout to Penn Ridge Veterinary Hospital because that’s the ones who are helping save Calvin’s life. So quick backstory. Calvin is our English Red Tick Coonhound and he’s 10 years old. In June he started getting a limp and we were surprised because we actually she made me stop taking him mountain biking with me.

[spp-timestamp time=”04:45″] Fast forward the lab work we find out is Cancer that ate away at the cartilage in his elbow. That’s why he was in so much pain. We did all the lab work we figured out okay the cancer is not spreading did not metastasize. We’d have to take the leg off because he’s in so much pain. We took the entire right leg off, the shoulder, scapula, everything.

[spp-timestamp time=”07:20″] We have that executive functioning component to our thought where we’re able to have that sequential reasoning and abstract thinking. If there was an injury that was to the extent of losing a limb or something, that impactful, we can think ahead, know what our lives are going to be like.

[spp-timestamp time=”08:01″] There’s also that psychological process of rehab. We remember how strong we used to be, or how it used to be before, but now, we’re starting here.

[spp-timestamp time=”09:12″] I feel it’s probably different for everybody. It’s harder to look at where you’re at today, whether it’s the circumstances, the condition of an injury or something like that, or other elements of your life.I think Andy Bernard says it best, I’m a huge office fan, but he says when I was here at Dunder Mifflin, I kept wishing that I was back in Stanford. And then when I was here, I kept wishing I was there, you know, I wish there was a way that we could realize we’re in the good old days when we’re there. Sometimes we can have a little bit of glorification of the memories where we were right up all the positive.

[spp-timestamp time=”13:29″] Maybe it’s like a culture shock thing might be right. I think through the self-development in the professional development after that transition helped me/us because you realize, okay, are you over-glorifying it to celebrate those experiences.

[spp-timestamp time=”16:28″] Two individuals that climbed it with him throughout his rehab process, he just kept saying, I’m doing it, I’m doing it. We didn’t have the heart to tell him. You can’t tell someone in that condition.

[spp-timestamp time=”19:26″] We’re probably also supposed to struggle through that process. Yes, that’s where you learn. I tell people in the entrepreneurial space, right, like you’re supposed to make mistakes. That’s how you learn some of the most powerful things you can carry into your future. Because now they’re hard-coded in your brain because they were painful and you’re not gonna forget them. If I was able to get through that surgery, or if I was able to get through that injury, and I was able to do that I can handle this, you know, so it can, it can really help shape us, but also give us confidence in a way going forward. So those who make it through those struggles comes with great growth.

[spp-timestamp time=”21:53″] The trials and tribulations, the bouncing back, the mindset from an injury, I think reflecting on lessons learned. I think a lot of us skip over these lessons that we’re supposed to be learning.

[spp-timestamp time=”22:58″] The culture of their sport where it really is, you push through like it, that’s just the culture of the sport that they play. So I think that there’s definitely to a point there’s a cultural influence.

[spp-timestamp time=”24:10″] Turns out that I had dislocate a rib in my back, in reality you can displace the cartilage apparently. So if you’re trying to breathe and your rib cage goes to expand, mine was held back from doing that. So every time I tried to breathe, the cartilage was shifted. So I had to have a chiropractor fix all this.

[spp-timestamp time=”25:59″] They just feel like they have to push through the pain. I didn’t know, if I was able to play with a dislocated shoulder.

[spp-timestamp time=”26:25″] I’m letting my body recover. Maybe I’ll change it up. Maybe instead of going to the CrossFit gym, I’m going to go and maybe do some yoga or do some mobility work or do something else.

[spp-timestamp time=”31:42″] Making sure the framed and signed “The Rock” artwork would properly go with the décor.

[spp-timestamp time=”01:00:00″] Final Words

Final Words:

I think it’s just, be in the now. Whether you’re talking injury and our previous level of functioning, or what you used to be able to do. What you wish you could do, or what the other person is doing.

It’s all about what we’re in right now. We could sit here and wish forever that the injury didn’t happen or that things went differently, it’s about accepting all of this. This is where we’re at right now, even though maybe we wouldn’t choose to be here, this is what it is. It is okay and we will be fine. There is that acceptance, whatever that present moment is giving you, we can then do something with it, in a much more efficient and impactful fashion.
