Final Words:

I think it’s just knowing what type of calendar relationship you have with your calendar. Are you a person that can schedule in advance and that then holds you accountable? Plus does it actually allow these things to happen? Or are you more spontaneous individual? No matter if you are trying to schedule things out, or if you are that more spontaneous side, look for those opportunities. Whether it’s an annual event that happens each year, or whether it’s an ebb and flow of your career cycle, or maybe it’s mine used to be which was this like one specific time of being on vacation that it was always that mental check in with myself but either way having that check in to just celebrate give yourself the credit for what you have accomplished in that year, or two years, three years, whatever it might be, because America and our culture we’re always going to have that push forward. And so purchasing ourselves to take a look in the rearview mirror sometimes see what we’ve done and then readjust the focus forward.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”10:00″] I don’t even know where I’ll be living this time next year. So I think to have those moments, whether it’s an anniversary, or you just choose an event that you kind of do annually, give yourself the opportunity to look back. To be able to say wow, this time last year, look at what I accomplished!

[spp-timestamp time=”11:20″] It can just be reflecting back on something. Doing that is really important. Often we go through the day to day to day, and you’re checking boxes and doing the things that we don’t realize how much we actually accomplish?

[spp-timestamp time=”14:30″] I think in everybody’s profession, there probably is something similar, not necessarily identical. That might be some natural breaking points of giving our selves the ability and permission to pause and look back.

[spp-timestamp time=”15:50″] First of all, it’s making that a priority. It has to be on your radar initially. Going in with an intention, six months from now, I’m going to check in with myself on this or in a year from now.

[spp-timestamp time=”18:45″] It’s tough because there have been times that I have tried to pre-register for races to get the early bird discount. Then something with work comes up and I’m like crap.

[spp-timestamp time=”20:00″] What just happened to me with a 5k in April, I couldn’t get rid of the race entry bib. People get injured, people have crazy lives. I was trying to just get it moved on within a running group I’m in but either people were already registered or otherwise.

[spp-timestamp time=”20:30″] It’s just one of those things where it just reinforced why I choose to not schedule things out that far in advance.

[spp-timestamp time=”22:00″] Final Words

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”00:56″] The struggle is real, and the entrepreneurial spirit people.

[spp-timestamp time=”01:35″] Shout out to rob a SYR CrossFit.

[spp-timestamp time=”01:54″] Scott’s four-legged family which is becoming a three legged family member. So shout out to Calvin The Coonhound in surgery recovery today. He finished his surgery last night, has become a tripod so I wasn’t sure what your thoughts were around that because we’re going to kind of tie this into the show here about injury and athletic recovery.

[spp-timestamp time=”03:00″] Shoutout to Penn Ridge Veterinary Hospital because that’s the ones who are helping save Calvin’s life. So quick backstory. Calvin is our English Red Tick Coonhound and he’s 10 years old. In June he started getting a limp and we were surprised because we actually she made me stop taking him mountain biking with me.

[spp-timestamp time=”04:45″] Fast forward the lab work we find out is Cancer that ate away at the cartilage in his elbow. That’s why he was in so much pain. We did all the lab work we figured out okay the cancer is not spreading did not metastasize. We’d have to take the leg off because he’s in so much pain. We took the entire right leg off, the shoulder, scapula, everything.

[spp-timestamp time=”07:20″] We have that executive functioning component to our thought where we’re able to have that sequential reasoning and abstract thinking. If there was an injury that was to the extent of losing a limb or something, that impactful, we can think ahead, know what our lives are going to be like.

[spp-timestamp time=”08:01″] There’s also that psychological process of rehab. We remember how strong we used to be, or how it used to be before, but now, we’re starting here.

[spp-timestamp time=”09:12″] I feel it’s probably different for everybody. It’s harder to look at where you’re at today, whether it’s the circumstances, the condition of an injury or something like that, or other elements of your life.I think Andy Bernard says it best, I’m a huge office fan, but he says when I was here at Dunder Mifflin, I kept wishing that I was back in Stanford. And then when I was here, I kept wishing I was there, you know, I wish there was a way that we could realize we’re in the good old days when we’re there. Sometimes we can have a little bit of glorification of the memories where we were right up all the positive.

[spp-timestamp time=”13:29″] Maybe it’s like a culture shock thing might be right. I think through the self-development in the professional development after that transition helped me/us because you realize, okay, are you over-glorifying it to celebrate those experiences.

[spp-timestamp time=”16:28″] Two individuals that climbed it with him throughout his rehab process, he just kept saying, I’m doing it, I’m doing it. We didn’t have the heart to tell him. You can’t tell someone in that condition.

[spp-timestamp time=”19:26″] We’re probably also supposed to struggle through that process. Yes, that’s where you learn. I tell people in the entrepreneurial space, right, like you’re supposed to make mistakes. That’s how you learn some of the most powerful things you can carry into your future. Because now they’re hard-coded in your brain because they were painful and you’re not gonna forget them. If I was able to get through that surgery, or if I was able to get through that injury, and I was able to do that I can handle this, you know, so it can, it can really help shape us, but also give us confidence in a way going forward. So those who make it through those struggles comes with great growth.

[spp-timestamp time=”21:53″] The trials and tribulations, the bouncing back, the mindset from an injury, I think reflecting on lessons learned. I think a lot of us skip over these lessons that we’re supposed to be learning.

[spp-timestamp time=”22:58″] The culture of their sport where it really is, you push through like it, that’s just the culture of the sport that they play. So I think that there’s definitely to a point there’s a cultural influence.

[spp-timestamp time=”24:10″] Turns out that I had dislocate a rib in my back, in reality you can displace the cartilage apparently. So if you’re trying to breathe and your rib cage goes to expand, mine was held back from doing that. So every time I tried to breathe, the cartilage was shifted. So I had to have a chiropractor fix all this.

[spp-timestamp time=”25:59″] They just feel like they have to push through the pain. I didn’t know, if I was able to play with a dislocated shoulder.

[spp-timestamp time=”26:25″] I’m letting my body recover. Maybe I’ll change it up. Maybe instead of going to the CrossFit gym, I’m going to go and maybe do some yoga or do some mobility work or do something else.

[spp-timestamp time=”31:42″] Making sure the framed and signed “The Rock” artwork would properly go with the décor.

Final Words:

I think it’s just, be in the now. Whether you’re talking injury and our previous level of functioning, or what you used to be able to do. What you wish you could do, or what the other person is doing.

It’s all about what we’re in right now. We could sit here and wish forever that the injury didn’t happen or that things went differently, it’s about accepting all of this. This is where we’re at right now, even though maybe we wouldn’t choose to be here, this is what it is. It is okay and we will be fine. There is that acceptance, whatever that present moment is giving you, we can then do something with it, in a much more efficient and impactful fashion.

Final Words:

Be aware in that acceptance. Being in the moment is part 1. There really is an acceptance here. Sometimes that lack of acceptance can get us stuck in areas we really didn’t want to be in, in the first place.

Life is going to have its ups and its down. We have to keep up with ourselves in terms of mentally being in that moment. We must have that awareness and that insight with what’s going on, how our bodies are reacting and responding to it. We must get to the point where we say “okay I accept this is happening, I don’t have to like it but I can accept it”. We are then able to live so much more whole, full, and really maximize our potential.

We fill our time to try and be as productive as possible and we fill the rest with distractions. Minutes that could be used to take a moment and reflect, we pick up our devices and distract ourselves from growing instead. By taking the time to reflect we become more self-aware and we increase our Emotional IQ. Helping us work on our Emotional IQ in this episode is a return attendance of Mind of the Athlete’s, Dr. Megan Cannon Ph.D.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”01:20″] WOD (Work Out of the Day) and Learn with Mind of the Athlete at SYR CrossFit.

[spp-timestamp time=”02:29″] On March 27th, Mind of the Athlete will be giving a talk on how to be more successful and making gains to process and progress towards our goals in 2017.

[spp-timestamp time=”05:38″] Using Zoom.us for the Podcast, unplugging and being mindful of your emotions.

[spp-timestamp time=”14:32″] “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do” – Steve Jobs. Emotional Intelligence and Emotional IQ refers to your ability to navigate and have awareness of emotions that you’re experiencing throughout your day. As well as through certain situations and also having the ability to recognize this in other people too.

[spp-timestamp time=”18:18″] With Emotional IQ you have to keep putting in the reps. It’s something that has to keep being worked on.

[spp-timestamp time=”21:39″] Taking a 30-second interval to just take a deep breath and think. Using apps in a positive way. Getting started with meditation and the myths behind it.

[spp-timestamp time=”25:27″] Mediation is different for everyone, the biggest problem is everyone is listening to what everyone else is doing. Just start finding a way to start working it into your life. Just like health, nutrition, and business. We are all different. It’s OK if you’re not perfect at it the first time. The most important thing is to just start.

[spp-timestamp time=”28:41″] Taking the time to reflect. Our smart devices can be used in a positive way but on the flip side they can be a distraction and make face to face interaction awkward.

[spp-timestamp time=”32:42″] “Be Here Now” Are you here in the moment, are you even in the conversation.

[spp-timestamp time=”37:48″] Better performance, clearer mind.

[spp-timestamp time=”41:28″] Final Words

Final Words

Baby steps, you have to start somewhere. The first step to developing a stronger Emotional IQ is to give yourself time to reflect. Whether it is using an app like Mood Track Diary, a journal or making a reminder on your calendar to just check in on yourself, once or twice a day to write down what you are feeling right now. Give yourself a moment to take a deep breath.

Final Words

There’s help and there is hope out there. Even though we live in a society that’s very busy. We don’t often have time to have deep, real conversions with each other about what is going on in our pre-conscious minds. The truth is, there are people out there like us, that love to come alongside people and engage them in how a person is doing. We’ve got the skills, resources, the platform, the people, the brand and the bandwidth to serve individuals, teams and companies so that they can feel better. Because when you feel better, you think and perform better!

There’s help, there’s hope and there is a path ahead that they can take you on.
