Timestamped Show Notes:

00:30 – Introduction

10:55 – It’s a requirement, certainly around tactics, any any sort of critical incident response. You’ve got to be squared away, or dialed in. We use that term interchangeably. So, people who have served know it’s critically important.

15:45 – It’s being a good handler and understanding what that communication means. It’s their ears, it’s their tail, it’s for some dogs, their hackles. It’s the sound of the bark of defense versus a prey bark. You know, it’s very, very different stuff.

20:00 – We gave it some time. This was four or five years ago, she ended up losing 54 pounds, and has kept it off for the last five years. So we knew that at that point, after the first six months when she had pretty significant results. We tested it out on a few other of our friends. One guy blew their results out of the water. He drives a bread truck for a living and he managed to lose 84 pounds.

30:45 – It’s a very, very unique mindset and it’s a very unique calling. You know, sometimes, it is just nice for these places to be recognized, rather than beat up, it’s not easy.

40:35 – It’s hard to convey that message on these various platforms, without having to do a certain amount of promotion around it. When we’ve brought people on to the company, it’s not until sometimes after that, that they realize this is our larger mission. We just want them aligned from a values perspective, and it naturally flows to our initiatives, and everybody gets behind it.

49:45 – We have something very, very, very similar and it’s just a sound.. Whatever supplements that you like, for me, magnolia bark, magnesium, etc. It’s 250-300 milligrams a night, I can literally feel the wave of sleep coming over me. I’ll get into bed at eight and I’ll be asleep by sometimes 805 my wife says she’s so jealous, it’s like it’s a gift. I mean, hers is more pain related, managing back pain, and so her sleep comes a little bit longer. We focus on that relentlessly. That’s when all your weight loss happens. That’s when your memories are regenerated. Your cells are regenerate synaptic pathways are being healed, or new ones are still being created.

51:40 – Final Words Shown Below…

Our Final Words of the Show:

You know, healthy people and a healthy planet, that really is what drives me, each and every day. That’s the first thing I focus on in the morning which is achieving that mission. I know that when we are able to improve people’s quality of life, that in turn that affects exponentially more people. So we’re just committed to that mission.

Coach Lou Williams: I am a father of three who grew up in the Harrisburg area, where I graduated from Central Dauphin East High School.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been a lover of all sports, especially those that tested endurance and mental toughness. I was a YMCA national level swimmer, a competitive runner, and a soccer player growing up but also dabbled in basketball, baseball, rock climbing, and triathlons.

I continued my education at Bloomsburg University, where I pursued a degree in Mass Communications (Journalism) while a four-year member and senior-year captain of the Bloomsburg University Men’s Soccer team. It was during this time at BU when I started coaching both soccer and swimming and realized that working with children in an athletic forum was something I really enjoyed.

I moved to the Bucks/Montgomery County area in 2003 with my wife Lauren, who is a Pennridge HS grad. I spent a few years experimenting with different employment, including stints as the head swim team coach and youth sports director at the Ambler Area YMCA.

More recently I’ve stepped into positions as the Aquatics Director at the Souderton Area High School, head coach for the 200+member Souderton Area Community Aquatic Club, head coach of the SAHS swimming and diving teams, and head coach of the Souderton borough summer swimming and diving teams.

My CrossFit “Journey” began in April of 2013 when I was seeking a way to stay competitive in a non-contact sport. Many years of post-collegiate soccer were beginning to exacerbate injuries suffered as a young athlete and I needed a way to stay active. A recommendation from my sister to try CrossFit resulted in me checking out CrossFit Apex, a move that has honestly changed my life.

Among other things, CrossFit has provided me with new knowledge of and excitement for fitness, a ton of new relationships, an outlet for my competitive nature, and a healthy environment to grow as a person.

Timestamped Show Notes:

00:30 – Introduction

02:40 – We probably have similar time domains here, Scott, my Level 1 was set to expire this past fall, and I did end up paying $1,000 and getting my L-2. This was important to my everyday workspace both with swimming and with CrossFit. So I started in 2013. So we’re going on eight full years, it took me a year or two to get my Level 1, five years of that though is coaching extensively at the CrossFit Apex gym. So I just got my Level 2, so I guess it’s about eight years in the CrossFit space, but I’ve been in the swimming coach role, in the fitness world too, similar to you and some other areas for a long, long time.

16:40 – CrossFit Apex did a great job of lending out some equipment which I know a lot of gyms are doing which is awesome for them to kind of give that to their members so we can solve for them. So I got a couple of kettlebells from them. I love kettlebell work. I do swings every day, the rower is my go to right now, we’ve been linked into the concept2 logbook I don’t know if you have that app on your phone. I would highly recommend it.

25:00 – Let’s talk some bike stuff. So let’s take my 12-year-old son and then myself, which I would call myself a newbie. I’ve been riding my mountain bike since I was 16-years-old and it’s done the trick for me. But we’ve been looking at different ways to be fit like mountain biking, getting outside, and biking seems to be something that is available right now. I’ve got two bikes. We’ve been doing some mountain biking in the area, and it has been super beneficial. I always tell people I love to hike. We’ve done some Ragnar trail races. I love to be outside in the woods whenever my kids get rambunctious.

30:00 – I just leveled up, I turned 40 in February 2020. So I was anxiously awaiting all the summer comps for this year but that now looks like they won’t happen too. The CrossFit regulations were two years ago and now it’s 35+ for masters.

33:30 – Every mount bike nowadays applied a standard, which all pretty much have a front shock, it’s a no-brainer. The advantage of going to full suspension is you are going to gain some nice squish in the back so to speak. But I will tell you, I can’t beat a beautiful hardtail for climbing. Because when you pedal up hills, that rear suspension is going to lag a little bit and you’re going to lose some of that power displacement on the pedal stroke.

42:40 – The extent of where I’ve been lately is basically Lake Nockamixon. But certainly, I’m familiar with some hiking and biking trails, and Ralph Stover out that way, come up in Green Lane, PA. Tons of stuff on and off the park trail right there.

48:30 – I also recommend Wissahickon, but northeast of there is an area that has a fire tower, called French Creek. They have an entire network of mountain biking trails in there too. I had ridden there three to four years ago but I remembered them because they had a rare and small wildfire. So that’s probably closer to you than obviously my region of Allentown and French Creek is big and it’s beautiful. I think that might also be under the DCNR property as well, I don’t know. I know Lake Nockamixon is definitely DCNR, which is a land preservation organization for the state of Pennsylvania. You should totally check out the trails app called AllTrails.

54:40 – Final Words Shown Below…

Our Final Words of the Show:

I appreciate you referring to me as kind of a leader in the CrossFit space, as a coach, my thing is working hard here and controlling what we can control. I’ve heard tons of people talk about the focus on “I’m important right now”. With the times that we’re going through, I know this may not air to later, but I’m in the space that we’re kind of living into. Just be a hard worker, be industrious, keep moving forward, keep getting stuff done. Keep working hard.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”10:00″] You can’t even explain this to people that haven’t experienced the Wilderness 101 and actually have done it or been there. It was amazing the amount of climbing just to get up to the top of that day.

[spp-timestamp time=”20:00″] I think a Specialized fat bike came in and it was like 13 hours or there’s like 12 hours and 50 some minutes. He comes rolling in on his fat bike and that’s just insanity!

[spp-timestamp time=”30:00″] Most people that don’t race or haven’t put themselves through this type of thing, don’t understand that getting sweaty is a challenge. What people don’t understand is when you’re wet and your equipment is rubbing back and forth on your legs, you might as well have 100 grit sandpaper. You’ll get Rashed beyond belief or bleed in places just like runners have happened, where their nipples are bleeding just from their shirt rubbing.

[spp-timestamp time=”40:00″] The government and these people are supposed to be watching after us and taking care of us. Like everything else, it’s more about the money and all the bullshit. Ever since I had this little girl, as a baby and watching her grow up, I now get more involved with the worrying about the types of stuff that I’m putting in her mouth.

[spp-timestamp time=”50:00″] So much of it goes back to diet, that’s what fuels us, it’s what makes us what we are. If you’re not putting the right things in and instead of putting chemicals and all of the sprays and the stuff that goes into manufactured foods.

[spp-timestamp time=”54:00″] It’s hard to wrap your brain around it and think that some guy is trying to screw you over by selling me a pop-tart, well that can’t be that bad. Well, it is that bad, Pop-Tarts Suck!

[spp-timestamp time=”56:00″] Final Words

Final Words:

The biggest thing I would say to anybody is to keep an open mind. This has been an awesome ride ever since I met you a number of years ago. I think it’s been three to four years ago now. Ever since I went out and suffered in the woods and it was a little bit of comfort there too. While I was standing underneath that bridge, watching you pull up in the middle of the W101 and knowing that I just put you through that pain and suffering. Part of that was pretty exciting. But the one thing that all of this stuff has kind of done for me is open my eyes to just being more open to different things. You know, I never was into this type of stuff. I’ve now read more books in the past four years than I probably read in the past 40.

It’s been a blast. You know, anybody watching in this stuff, check out this FATDOC, it was a great story. I told my wife as soon as I watched it and said something to her. I don’t care if I gotta put my family in a car, go to Staten Island to visit with one of her family members, I’ll put it on in my truck so nobody can get away from it. They’re just gonna listen to it because it’s amazing information that’s out there now. Somebody can definitely get something from it. It’s not stuff that I would have been following in the past and it’s definitely things that I’ve been opened up to more recently. It’s just been a great ride to learn all this stuff.

Megan has been working with many school sports teams on mindset preparation. Today we dig into the swimming team(s) and much more. She talks to our audience regularly, about many high-value topics such as health, fitness, mindset, and Sports Psychology. Specializing as a Sports Psychologist, Megan brings a wealth of mindset psychology and a whole lot more to our show. Listen in while we catch up with Dr. Megan Cannon Ph.D.!

Today’s shorter podcast is Part II of our theme from June, for July. We dig deeper into the understanding benefits to celebrate your anniversaries. We recorded both episodes back to back, live, at F13 Performance surrounded by the #SYRArmy.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”02:00″] Five year anniversary of SYR CrossFit, now F13 Performance.

[spp-timestamp time=”04:00″] Coming up on almost three years of the podcast as an anniversary reflection.

[spp-timestamp time=”05:00″] I did a Facebook Live the other day to celebrate that my Fuel Foundations non-profit was approved.

[spp-timestamp time=”11:35″] New anniversaries like Scott’s collapsed lung and now his wedding.

[spp-timestamp time=”12:37″] Fourth to the fifth anniversary of Dr. Megan working with the swim program of Emmaus High School.

[spp-timestamp time=”13:00″] A reflection on Dr. Megan’s third year in the Poconos for a Summer Camp Run.

[spp-timestamp time=”22:00″] Fat-adapted training celebrations and reflection by Scott.

[spp-timestamp time=”28:00″] Being aware of reminding ourselves to pause and celebrate these anniversaries and look back. Where was your training two years ago vs your awareness of that today? You might not call it an anniversary, but rather call it a reflection.

[spp-timestamp time=”30:57″] Final Words

Final Words:

Final Thoughts are, give yourself a permission to pause and that’s not just in looking back and goalsetting you know. Obviously, a really big part of what we’ve been talking about is to also give yourself a chance to pause and just slow down. Recognize the influence of culture and our particular culture that pushes. Look at how much your self-worth linked to what you’re doing in a day. It’s okay to pause, it’s okay to go to the beach, it’s okay to take time to not only look back but to just give yourself time to rejuvenate, refresh, and slow down. This is so you can sustain being productive, or sustain your work, or sustain your level of whatever type of productivity longer.

Final Words:

It’s it’s all about perspective to me. I wrap myself around all the right people, I was just at John Dilgen’s this past weekend I put a custom cap door in our buddy John Dilgens home. John is a young man in more pain than I could ever possibly understand. So to sit here and bitch about the fact that my knee hurts and I gotta walk a little bit weird, it just doesn’t seem right to me.

So I just try to keep my head in the right place and like you said before, just keep doing what I do. Just tweak it in the way that is necessary. I like to keep a good perspective on what you got. I think I had something similar before that so many people are so upset about some of the most trivial bullshit in their life and sit around just making it miserable for their spouses for their kids. They don’t even have a grasp on what they truly have.

I try to live by knowing what I got. I’m an extremely happy man and share that gratitude all the time. I try to give back to as many people as I can because it’s just the way I think it should be. So keep a perspective out there, keep your head up and when shit happens, know you can get around it.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”10:00″] The struggle is real and I’m just trying to imagine the struggle of people in that town trying to keep that community together. Especially when all of that started going down. Even after many people decided to get the hell out of dodge but there was still a few people who just never left.

[spp-timestamp time=”20:00″] I was doing all of that biking just to become healthier. It was something I loved ever since I was a little kid and I did some cross country stuff. A lot of those guys are lean, mean, fighting machine super fast and it’s a short race.

[spp-timestamp time=”30:00″] I still did 40 some miles you know, that’s where the mental comes in. Super bummed when I got pulled and I was still able to ride. I just wasn’t keeping the pace.

[spp-timestamp time=”40:00″] GoPro, I love the fact that you tied what can be considered a very expensive purchase, for you and your sister, to very important things that are tied to passion.

[spp-timestamp time=”50:00″] That was my worst race ever. I had every possible mechanical bullshit problem go wrong. I had a mechanical on every lap, it was beyond frustrating.

Final Words:

One, just as a heads up for future info coming up, I’m going to meet with the Fit Chick, Selene Yeager of Bicycling Magazine. Selene is one of those chicks that I’ve known for many, many years as long as I’ve been in the Lehigh Valley.

I thought of this as we were talking day and I would say, “GET OUT OF YOUR OWN HEAD”. That’s my big comment for today, “GET OUT OF YOUR OWN HEAD. We sit around and worry about the 10,000 things going wrong. Take the steps and do the two things you know you can do right. Don’t engulf yourself in all of the bullshit that’s going on. There’s so much of it. Trust me. I could talk for 10 podcasts in a row about some of the stuff I got going on.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”09:30″] Black Ice Adventures. This was a bad one, I laid off the gas and was going to go through it pretty mellow. When I hit it, my truck disappeared literally the ass started coming around. In my pickup, Steve’s both arms went, one grabbed the console, the next one is out the window. I got the infamous Willie’s in my stomach.

[spp-timestamp time=”15:00″] This day being a like a chronic reader and whatever, I still am yet to figure out 100%. Anybody looks at overweight people and thinks they have a weight problem, an eating problem, whatever. Quite often it’s not. That’s not the problem. That’s the solution to their problems.

[spp-timestamp time=”18:30″] Along came this event called the Wilderness 101. When I first started reading about this I thought you had to be a special kind of idiot to even consider this. A long long time ago when I was hardcore, it might have been as far as 10 years ago, it was a Leesburg Bakers Dozen Race.

[spp-timestamp time=”25:00″] Sharing the right stories, maybe they could click with some people, clearly, that clicked with him. He just needed a goal.

[spp-timestamp time=”30:00″] Wilderness 101 continued. I know exactly the first hill and every one thereafter for the next 40 some miles. I have a much better understanding as to the type of training that needs to be involved.

[spp-timestamp time=”35:00″] Shoutout to Selene Yeager “The Fit Chick”, author at Bicycling Magazine and FINAL WORDS.
