Timestamped Show Notes:

00:30 – Introduction

07:45 – I think what my passion and purpose, to answer your question, is that I went from being an elite athlete to, fatigued, tired, depressed, gained 30 pounds overnight, just lost everything I had as an athlete and I felt like it was overnight. But it wasn’t and so that’s kind of my purpose now. Educating that what happened to me could happen to you. Let’s stop it now before you ignore it five years later, and end up me years later, still can’t do that.

13:45 – That’s what I did when I wrote my book, it was more for my own therapy session. But what were my red flags that happened for probably the 10 years before my breakdown? That happened in March 2013 that led me to that day it worked up so I wasn’t aware of it so I had to go back in time till like high school and go back. Where are these things happening that I was so oblivious to? So that is kind of a task I give everyone I work with is like let’s go back and see what are your stressors you know, what are things that are triggers for you that activate that stress response and you know, we know we know that acute stress is good beneficial, but when it comes like non-stop but just never turns off that when it gets to be trouble for our bodies.

20:00 – So what would you say if I just filled you with macronutrients with vitamins and minerals and everything you need, instead of a pill. You know, get it from your food and it’s hard, I take ton of supplements, but it’s hard to get that from your food. But ideally, it’s food. I read Michael Pollan’s book forever go, and he has the best thing like food. You can read the ingredients list that your great grandmother had in her house

30:00 – When I have people on my show. It’s like, what’s your Why? What’s your drive and, you know, follow your passion, your purpose, and I feel like my purpose of going through eight years of health imbalances that I had, is so I help other people avoid going through what I have had and so it’s finding out why so for me to help other people what I’ve decided is, you know, I can’t solicit people but just you want them to come to you when they’re ready for help because being a functional practitioner now and focusing that as my main business is health coaching, being health detective is really investigating with functional labs and nutritional therapy and quarterly now together to create an individualized protocol to transform, rebuild, repair the whole you.

39:30 – I learned years ago that it does a lot of that stuff doesn’t get through your stomach acid so if it doesn’t like I use a megaspore for base probiotic that can actually bypass acidic that’s supposed to prevent you know the bad things were going through and so it certain things might not even get into your small intestine, large intestine, so it is quality, a lot of that stuff.

44:30 – I went over my hormone panel and my hormones right down at the bottom of the line that you should, and I was like, oh, man, I’m pretty good. That means I could be better and don’t settle for just how you are now that you could even be so much more energetic and happier and thriving. We all can be so much more. So why do we just settle for this, there’s so much more we can do.

50:00 – I just did labs as it just went through and I did this other lab and I keep testing people, you know, encouraging people to do lab testing. Because I didn’t know as I said, what my microbiome is about. I did a pathogen test, and it’s not good. So I might feel like I’m thriving and my immune system is super strong. But I know some people that got coronavirus, and we’re sick for two weeks and they’re active, they’re fit, they’re not overweight, but why did they get really sick from it?

58:41 – Final Words

Our Final Words of the Show:

I just think take ownership of your health for your body. You’ve got one body, you know, you do it for your car, you take your car in for repair, oil, lube change, you get new tires, getting alignment, etc. So why don’t we invest the amount of money we do on our cars to our own bodies? I don’t get it.

I graduated in Kinesiology in 2005 and became a personal trainer. I also became a professional fighter in 2009-2017. It has always been more than just transforming the body though, the mind and spirit play key factors to one’s success. Which I definitely learned through my journey as a fighter and a coach. I have been honored to be given the opportunity to work with many clients on their mind, body, and spirit. Helping other’s live happier more fulfilled lives.

Quote: The opportunities are in the obstacles. – Clifford Starks

I realized just how important the mind was in the process of accomplishing any real success. I became extremely fascinated with psychology also had my personal life experience to pull from as well. I am always learning and growing. I love the saying if knowledge was all it took everyone would have 6 packs and be Millionaires. Knowledge is good to have, but applied knowledge is better, so I continue to take action. To grow as a person and a leader is the same as health, you never stop.

Influencers Mentioned:

Jim Rohn Quote: “You Are The Average of the Five People You Spend the Most Time With.”

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”10:00″] In order to crush the bad, we have to look it directly in the face. With that being said, it is important to build a solid base and your solid base are the people you do hang around with. That’s the reset button that will teach you to go right into your default. I can hang out with five people who are in crappy situations who are down. I feel so strong in my abilities, I think so strong in my belief in self, that I could bring them up.

[spp-timestamp time=”20:00″] My first thing is I love them. I empathize and I love because the one thing I’ve seen is people will fight for what they love. You know, I swear, everyone that’s gone through a process, it’s because someone they loved, they’ve either disappointed or they didn’t.

[spp-timestamp time=”32:00″] I say the opportunities are in the obstacles. There are going to be obstacles in life, that’s just the way it goes. There is no perfect road and you have to live on an imperfect road.

[spp-timestamp time=”40:00″] It all starts with the internal. So it’s not to say that you don’t feel things, it’s not to say that negative comments don’t hurt. It is to say you get to choose how you’re going to perceive it. You get to choose how you move forward.

[spp-timestamp time=”53:00″] So when I coach people, I have a really high percentage of people who are successful. It really does start with love. It starts with that because when you love them, it gives them permission to love themselves. There are times when it’s hard for people to love themselves because they’re either shamed or they feel like they can’t do it. They feel like failures and they don’t love themselves enough.

[spp-timestamp time=”01:02:00″] Final Words

[spp-timestamp time=”00:10″] Introduction and a regular co-host shout out to Dr. Megan Cannon, Sports Psychologist for getting Rick and Scott introduced. Plus Scott knocks Rick’s bio intro and killed it!

[spp-timestamp time=”04:00″] It’s interesting because if you let the wrong thing get into the driver’s seat when you’re going through your life, it’s going to make you miserable. It goes back to that classic quote like how are you supposed to move forward if you’re always living behind or something like that. It’s one of these is something different manifestations of that quote, but it’s is so true.

[spp-timestamp time=”06:24″] Why do you have to go back? If you served, then you have that honor and that respect. You can move on to start a whole new chapter.

[spp-timestamp time=”08:00″] Three of the most top psychologically strenuous things that you can go through in your life.

[spp-timestamp time=”14:00″] That’s the thing, an existential crisis we’ve made that you literally ignore your call to adventure and you continue to do the things that you think you’re supposed to do or you have all these obligations that are essentially self-imposed, right?

[spp-timestamp time=”18:00″] If you’re really growth minded, that kind of a lifestyle is rough, and I don’t wish it on anybody, because it means you got to leave relationships, leave jobs and you leave states. If you’re going to honor the process of what growth really requires, that means that you are going to grow away from certain things that are really comfortable in it and that you might enjoy.

[spp-timestamp time=”20:45″] I think that it’s entirely possible to find people that you’re going to grow with. It’s just way harder.

[spp-timestamp time=”22:52″] One of the mindset shifts for me that it was a literal life changer was focusing on what you do want vs you don’t want. Something that’s really changed my life so you know, I don’t want to go broke is much different than I want to make six figures this year, right?

[spp-timestamp time=”25:20″] Preconceived notions and ideas. Cognitive researchers believe that you don’t know about 95% of what goes on in your own brain.

[spp-timestamp time=”27:00″] Writing is a process where there’s not a lot of validation.

[spp-timestamp time=”31:20″] We’re in a culture of doers, so you just keep doing, and doing, the path just keeps getting further and further away from where you really want to be at times.

[spp-timestamp time=”33:29″] You need to protect your energy, you can end up somewhere miserable, burnt out and exhausted. Then you’re going to hate what you’re doing because I’ve literally gone down that road of hustle.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” … “One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” ~ Carl Jung

[spp-timestamp time=”37:00″] History of LionHeart. We had all CrossFit athletes that we sponsored, which is why we started the show.

[spp-timestamp time=”42:52″] I found the beauty in life which is outside of rigidity.

[spp-timestamp time=”44:04″] It’s serendipitous. The morning coffee podcast episodes on LionHeart.

[spp-timestamp time=”46:00″] I kept denying that call to adventure and because of that, I delayed what I really wanted to be doing in this world by years. It was painful and if I really fought to get that out there. Burn Your Coach was released a year ago, it was essentially the idea behind that which is a lot of what we’re talking about. Most people mistake being comfortable for being happy and those two things just aren’t the same.

[spp-timestamp time=”47:51″] Who are the people you’re surrounding yourself with? Who are the inner circles that you’re allowing your manifestation to take with? Setting big hairy audacious goals normally does not come from the old circles of influence, they come from the new circles of influence that you’re allowing into your life.

[spp-timestamp time=”48:11″] I got out of the military at 12 years. Everybody said you got to do eight more years. The only thing I could think about is eight years to do a job that you’re unhappy with when you know there’s an entire life you want to be doing.

[spp-timestamp time=”50:39″] I just finished recording the audiobook literally yesterday. It’s a ridiculous process.

[spp-timestamp time=”51:23″] There are some great books like former Navy SEAL guys or stories of Navy SEAL’s. Check out Fearless about former SEAL, Adam Brown.

[spp-timestamp time=”52:33″] I wanted to be a rock star my whole life. I spent a couple years playing in the music industry and we were huge but we had like a local song on the radio and we opened for some bands that I liked.

[spp-timestamp time=”54:00″] How can we achieve more? Do the thing that you feel called to do in the world. It will be the biggest performance hack you could ever imagine.

[spp-timestamp time=”55:24″] Final Words

Final Words:

I’m going to close it with a Carl Young quote. It wasn’t the quote I gave you at the beginning of the show:

“Until you make the subconscious conscious, it’s going to rule your life and you’re going to call it fate.”

I think there’s no more worthy ideal than figuring out who you really want to be in what you really are. I know I’ve been talking about it throughout this whole show.

Until you do that, everything else won’t matter. You’ll put your energy in the wrong place, you’ll be in the wrong relationship, you’ll do the wrong job and not necessarily every single aspect.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[spp-timestamp time=”00:30″] Introduction

[spp-timestamp time=”00:56″] The struggle is real, and the entrepreneurial spirit people.

[spp-timestamp time=”01:35″] Shout out to rob a SYR CrossFit.

[spp-timestamp time=”01:54″] Scott’s four-legged family which is becoming a three legged family member. So shout out to Calvin The Coonhound in surgery recovery today. He finished his surgery last night, has become a tripod so I wasn’t sure what your thoughts were around that because we’re going to kind of tie this into the show here about injury and athletic recovery.

[spp-timestamp time=”03:00″] Shoutout to Penn Ridge Veterinary Hospital because that’s the ones who are helping save Calvin’s life. So quick backstory. Calvin is our English Red Tick Coonhound and he’s 10 years old. In June he started getting a limp and we were surprised because we actually she made me stop taking him mountain biking with me.

[spp-timestamp time=”04:45″] Fast forward the lab work we find out is Cancer that ate away at the cartilage in his elbow. That’s why he was in so much pain. We did all the lab work we figured out okay the cancer is not spreading did not metastasize. We’d have to take the leg off because he’s in so much pain. We took the entire right leg off, the shoulder, scapula, everything.

[spp-timestamp time=”07:20″] We have that executive functioning component to our thought where we’re able to have that sequential reasoning and abstract thinking. If there was an injury that was to the extent of losing a limb or something, that impactful, we can think ahead, know what our lives are going to be like.

[spp-timestamp time=”08:01″] There’s also that psychological process of rehab. We remember how strong we used to be, or how it used to be before, but now, we’re starting here.

[spp-timestamp time=”09:12″] I feel it’s probably different for everybody. It’s harder to look at where you’re at today, whether it’s the circumstances, the condition of an injury or something like that, or other elements of your life.I think Andy Bernard says it best, I’m a huge office fan, but he says when I was here at Dunder Mifflin, I kept wishing that I was back in Stanford. And then when I was here, I kept wishing I was there, you know, I wish there was a way that we could realize we’re in the good old days when we’re there. Sometimes we can have a little bit of glorification of the memories where we were right up all the positive.

[spp-timestamp time=”13:29″] Maybe it’s like a culture shock thing might be right. I think through the self-development in the professional development after that transition helped me/us because you realize, okay, are you over-glorifying it to celebrate those experiences.

[spp-timestamp time=”16:28″] Two individuals that climbed it with him throughout his rehab process, he just kept saying, I’m doing it, I’m doing it. We didn’t have the heart to tell him. You can’t tell someone in that condition.

[spp-timestamp time=”19:26″] We’re probably also supposed to struggle through that process. Yes, that’s where you learn. I tell people in the entrepreneurial space, right, like you’re supposed to make mistakes. That’s how you learn some of the most powerful things you can carry into your future. Because now they’re hard-coded in your brain because they were painful and you’re not gonna forget them. If I was able to get through that surgery, or if I was able to get through that injury, and I was able to do that I can handle this, you know, so it can, it can really help shape us, but also give us confidence in a way going forward. So those who make it through those struggles comes with great growth.

[spp-timestamp time=”21:53″] The trials and tribulations, the bouncing back, the mindset from an injury, I think reflecting on lessons learned. I think a lot of us skip over these lessons that we’re supposed to be learning.

[spp-timestamp time=”22:58″] The culture of their sport where it really is, you push through like it, that’s just the culture of the sport that they play. So I think that there’s definitely to a point there’s a cultural influence.

[spp-timestamp time=”24:10″] Turns out that I had dislocate a rib in my back, in reality you can displace the cartilage apparently. So if you’re trying to breathe and your rib cage goes to expand, mine was held back from doing that. So every time I tried to breathe, the cartilage was shifted. So I had to have a chiropractor fix all this.

[spp-timestamp time=”25:59″] They just feel like they have to push through the pain. I didn’t know, if I was able to play with a dislocated shoulder.

[spp-timestamp time=”26:25″] I’m letting my body recover. Maybe I’ll change it up. Maybe instead of going to the CrossFit gym, I’m going to go and maybe do some yoga or do some mobility work or do something else.

[spp-timestamp time=”31:42″] Making sure the framed and signed “The Rock” artwork would properly go with the décor.

[spp-timestamp time=”01:00:00″] Final Words

Final Words:

I think it’s just, be in the now. Whether you’re talking injury and our previous level of functioning, or what you used to be able to do. What you wish you could do, or what the other person is doing.

It’s all about what we’re in right now. We could sit here and wish forever that the injury didn’t happen or that things went differently, it’s about accepting all of this. This is where we’re at right now, even though maybe we wouldn’t choose to be here, this is what it is. It is okay and we will be fine. There is that acceptance, whatever that present moment is giving you, we can then do something with it, in a much more efficient and impactful fashion.

Final Words

When any of us go through those dark times, we go through those struggles, which inevitably happen to us. They get thrown at us, we get curve balls and the most important thing to remember is it is not permanent. Right now you may be stuck at this moment. It may appear to last forever, and you can’t see the end of the tunnel, but it is there.

When we go through things, when there are those struggles, it’s that awareness, that ability to see that there is another side of this. It’s not permanent. You can get help. You can get resources. You can get out of it with the aid of others, companies, podcasts, etc.
