Gary Ross works with everyone from the C-Suite to the production line to be a better communicator. As a former FORTUNE 500 corporate communications executive, Emmy-nominated broadcast journalist and current stadium and arena public address announcer, Gary knows you don’t always need a booming sound system to get your message across. He provides actionable tips and advice that people can use to enhance their careers and build credibility and influence.

Prior to his training, coaching, and consulting work, Gary led communications departments at CDW, Hyatt Hotels, and Fortune Brands. Before joining the corporate communications profession, he worked as a reporter and anchor for WCBD-TV in Charleston, SC, where he was nominated for an Emmy Award in investigative journalism, traveled overseas with the U.S. military and reported from the eye of Category Four Hurricane Hugo.

Quote “Everything Communicates.”

Gary has been interviewed for several communications publications and podcasts and has spoken on communications and change for leading organizations and universities.

Gary is a member of the Public Relations Society of America, the International Association of Business Communicators, the Association of Change Management Professionals and the National Speakers Association (Illinois Chapter). He holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism degree from the Medill School at Northwestern University.

Today’s Top 3 Takeaways:

Everything Communicates

Storytelling For Success

Communicate For Growth

Timestamped Show Notes:

08:50 – I have three number one rules of communication, and they’re all tied for number one. That’s why they’re all number one. One of them is, Everything Communicates and that’s one of the things that communicates. I’ll tell you kind of the converse of the story…

19:00 – Well, so we need to be strategic absolutely about communication, because, you know, how many times have you been there whether you’re in communications or not. You’re at work and somebody comes to you and says, oh, you know, we need to send out an email about XYZ. People’s minds, especially when it goes to communication, a lot of times just go to the tactic, we need an email, we need a meeting, we need a town hall, we need a video.

23:25 – Tell them a story! That’s my third number one rule of communication, is to tell them a story. Why is that? Go back to caveman drawings. That’s just the natural way for humans to communicate and to relate to one another and to move one another, to action. Frankly, it’s not that tough, because there’s a very simple structure.

29:20 – Regarding the e-Learning we’ve got, it’s all about the video success. So you got the visual and the audio, but then we also have little exercises that reinforce a lot of the points that we talked about in the videos. Then we also added in each of the courses, we have these downloadable tools and templates that you can take and keep. If you want you want to go old school, you print it out and you stick it up next to your desk and you can consult it regularly. One of the things I’ve got is on the corporate narrative course in there, but it is the storytelling template that I that I had just talked about earlier.

49:00 – Being explicit and prescriptive about what we need people to do is important. So we fall short of that all the time in our workplace communication. So we’ve done the hard part, we’ve won people over, but it’s like, well, what do I do? And too often nobody has the answer for that.

52:20 – Final Words

Our Final Words of the Show:

When we communicate better we can make work life, and life in general, better for all of us, for ourselves, and for others. That’s what I’m all about doing, is about making a difference with good and improved communication in the workplace and in people’s lives in general.

A passionate storyteller by nature Steve Pacinelli serves as BombBomb’s Chief Marketing Officer. Recently, Steve co-authored the definitive guide to better business communication, Rehumanize Your Business. Prior to leading the charge of the “relationships through video” movement, he led a sales team winning with BombBomb. He was a Sales Manager, Vice President of Events, and the National Speaker for Realtor.com, and presented to more than 1,000 audiences along the way.

Quote: “The obstacle is the way”

Thematically these presentations focus on online marketing, video communication, lead conversion, consumer psychology, and sales automation. However, craft beer, photography, motorcycles, and Steve’s family of five always made a cameo.

Timestamped Show Notes:

00:30 – Introduction

02:30 – Garage office? It looks a lot bigger than it is. It’s about six by eight feet in the corner of the garage. I built it with my father-in-law in like two days, just to be separated from the house. I want to redo the garage and put the gym in my office upstairs and build a second. My gym is in the basement for me right now.

09:30 – I started using video for communication purposes, and again, there’s marketing through video and relationships through video. Marketing is when you get the green screen, the drone, the high-end lighting, and the equipment and you record it. Relationships through video are more organic messages where someone’s just taken out their phone, or they’re using their laptop camera or something and they hit the record button. They know whatever message they have to deliver would be much better delivered in person but time or distance or technologies are keeping them apart. It’s not suited for text-based communication either, it has nuance, it requires more clarity. Relationships need to be built and so back in 2011, I didn’t work for BomBomb then, I was looking for a way to travel the country on a 48 city speaking tour.

16:00 – There is a shiny authenticity, the shiny or that something, is a lot of times the less authentic and it feels that way depending on what you’re trying to accomplish with your video. There’s a time and place for shiny, for sure. Okay. But there’s also a time and a place if you’re trying to deliver a heartfelt message. The less production that you put towards it, the more it sounds like it comes from the heart and less from the mind.

21:00 – I think, 25 years ago were the biggest shifts that we’ve had in the business world, as all of our communication was relegated to black text on a white screen. When you remove the messenger from the message, you remove the humanity, remove the emotion, you remove the tone, you remove the personal nature of the message, now we can personalize. That’s all the crap that we get in our email inbox every day that has your name on it that’s personalized. But there’s a difference between personalized and personal. Personal is a message written specifically for you, personalized is that token or autofill that fills in the information that’s not for you specifically. So I think that’s part of the problem because we’re relying on text messages, text-based email, text-based slack messages, etc.

30:00 – The visual cues are as human beings, we are meant to read visual cues. We have been talking for hundreds of thousands of years, there’s only been mass literacy for the past 500 years. So we’re not great. It’s not ingrained in us over hundreds of thousands of years of speaking face to face and reading, like reading people’s expressions. If you weren’t good at reading someone’s facial expressions, reading body language 1000, 2000, 3000 years ago, then you didn’t survive to pass on your genes to the next generation.

41:30 – CTA, translated for the newbies is a call to action. So if I was, if I said Scott, you need to buy my book. I could have added a quick pop-up that would appear in the video when you play it. You click on it, it would go directly there. Then you see it within seconds. It just drops that video right inside the email. Now it comes across with that animated preview too and that’s great to catch people’s attention.

50:30 – We just released our brand new mobile app last week. So the tracking and analytics are great, for example, if you played 98% of the video or 52% of the game, you played it. All of that is available right on the app. The recording is then your video library as well as all of the tracking and analytics with who’s playing it.

57:15 – Final Words Shown Below…

Our Final Words of the Show:

I’m going to go with this is a mantra that we’ve instilled in our marketing department. Honestly, it has bled into the rest of the company and kind of ties into some of the stuff behind me here too. It’s simple, it is “BE A VALUE AND ABUNDANCE WILL FOLLOW.”

On today’s new #FUELUP Friday I share a brief New Years Eve daytime phone call that inspired an important reminder on positive communications. We reflect on the importance of great verbal, written, and electronic communication skills to help you succeed in business and in life. We also drop a fun and random slang term for rude people, known as Douche Nozzle’s, ha!

Douche Nozzle = (vulgar, slang, derogatory) A rude, obnoxious, or contemptible person.

Top 3 Hot Point Takeaways:

Treat others as you wish to be treated.

Positive Verbal communication.

Proof your written and electronic communication.

BONUS: Don’t forget to pause, take a deep breath.

Today’s Resource Links from the Podcast:

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/douche_nozzle

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=douche%20nozzle

Timestamped Show Notes:

00:30: Introduction

05:00: I’ve always worked through the local onsite land manager where we do trail building. Mostly we just try and keep the trails clear, you know, keep people happy. I’m a huge mountain biker, and I have no problem putting in some sweat equity. There are not many people who do this and I want to know that when I get down there, I could ride my bike and not have to worry about running into a blown down tree or storm damage. I bought all the toys, I got the chainsaws, I got the tools, I got the gear, so why not help out?!

10:00: Today’s show is really about improving communication skills. So I decided that with #FUELUP Fridays, depending on where I’m at in my mental state. As you can tell, I might have been a little frustrated by that douche nozzle. I just don’t respect people who don’t respect me. You know, I truly believe in an age-old statement that you know you should do unto others, you know, and expect the same in return. Treat people like you want to be treated.

15:00: Take a little risk and let other people in. But so many of us have this wall up preventing this. Over three and a half years now going on four years of podcasting, I can actually thank this platform for helping drop that off and break those barriers down. That’s why I want to kind of share this for today’s FUEL UP Friday.

20:00: Now the book is coming. I tried to talk about too much because but I do it because I kicked myself in the ass and we are working on it later tonight. I gotta get the editing done.

28:00: Final Words

Our Final Words of the Show:

So our final words for today a summary of the importance of verbal communication, written communication, electronic communication. Don’t forget to pause, take a deep breath, think about it, proofread it, and then move on.
