Why We Age with Dr. William Haas Ep 474
Cellular Health, Renewed Energy & Longevity:
The conversation between Scott and Dr. William Haas focused on health optimization, with a deep dive into cellular health, inflammation, and the role of peptides. Dr. Haas explained his approach, emphasizing the importance of addressing redox balance, detoxification, and repair in a methodical way before considering interventions like peptides. They discussed the limitations of conventional medicine and the value of functional medicine when personalized and data-driven. Scott shared his personal experiences with health optimization, including his use of BPC-157 for a shoulder injury and his journey with advanced blood panels. The discussion highlighted the need for individualized care, the dangers of protocol-driven or “easy button” approaches, and the importance of energy freedom alongside other freedoms. They also touched on the challenges of navigating the health and wellness industry, including concerns about some practices and the role of AI in interpreting health data.

Show Notes:
Health Optimization and Functional Medicine:
Scott and William discussed health optimization approaches, with William explaining the concept of “redoxing before you repair” – the importance of balancing oxidative stress through antioxidants before addressing inflammation. They explored the value of regular blood panel testing, with William recommending quarterly or six-month monitoring of specific markers, and discussed the challenges of individual variability in health responses. The conversation covered functional medicine approaches versus traditional protocols, with William cautioning that while functional medicine can become too protocolized, the key is finding practitioners with sufficient experience to understand and interpret patient-specific data effectively.
Bioregenesis and Root Cause Healing:
Scott and William discussed the concept of redox and the bioregenesis methodology, focusing on the importance of addressing underlying issues like detox and inflammation before repairing the body. William emphasized that focusing solely on repair methods like peptides or stem cells is ineffective if the root causes, such as poor diet or toxins, are not addressed first. Scott shared his personal experiences with wildland firefighting and the impact of poor nutrition on health, aligning with William’s perspective on the need for upstream interventions to promote healing.
Integrative Medicine and Nutrition Discussion:
William shared his 15-year journey in integrative medicine, starting from his teens when he was introduced to Andrew Wild’s books about clean living and anti-inflammatory diets. He discussed how medical education lacks sufficient focus on nutrition, with Scott agreeing that MDs typically receive only limited nutritional training during their education. William expressed concern about how peptide treatments are sometimes used as a quick fix rather than addressing underlying health issues, emphasizing that peptides should be viewed as tools to support the body’s natural healing processes rather than standalone solutions.
Initial Testing in Healthcare Practices:
William and Scott discussed the importance of comprehensive initial testing before starting treatment, with William explaining that his practice recommends a deep dive cellular diagnostic panel covering seven areas of cellular health and micronutrient assessment as the recommended starting point. Scott expressed frustration that this approach differs from veterinary medicine where thorough testing is standard practice, attributing the difference to insurance company policies. William shared his background as an athlete interested in health optimization, which led him to pursue preventative medicine rather than conventional disease management approaches.
Medical Career and Content Creation:
William discussed his career journey from athletic development to medicine, including taking time off to get an MBA to better understand the business of medicine outside the insurance system. He shared his experience creating medical content online, noting both the success and challenges of putting himself out there as a physician, including being reported to the state medical board for discussing BPC. Scott acknowledged William’s successful content creation and discussed his own experiences with similar therapies, expressing interest in exploring hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the future.
Metabolic Syndrome and Healing Processes:
Scott and William discussed the importance of addressing metabolic syndrome and inflammation in healing processes, particularly for soft tissue repair. They emphasized the need for early detection of metabolic dysfunction through blood work and the value of working with knowledgeable experts to create personalized healing plans. William highlighted the concept of “energy freedom” as a crucial fourth component alongside time, location, and financial freedom, stressing the importance of proper rest and recovery for overall well-being.
YouTube Content vs Medical Treatments:
Scott and William discussed the benefits and challenges of creating content on YouTube versus other platforms, with William expressing concerns about the lack of personal connection on YouTube. They also talked about the differences between in-person and remote medical treatments, particularly regarding hormone therapy and peptide treatments. William shared his experience with patients who had received inconsistent advice from other wellness centers, and they discussed the potential for a follow-up episode after September when William’s schedule opens up more.
01:05:00 – Final Words
Our Final Words of the Show:
There’s a lot of talking about time, location, and money freedom, and I think there’s this kind of fourth door that nobody really kind of sells or explores, and it’s kind of the Energy Freedom. We tripped all over it with this Redox kind of concept, which is you get plenty of guys who hit all three. We got time well dialed in, and you know we’re doing all the right things, and we’ve kind of built financial freedom, but they can’t enjoy any of it because they’re just flat exhausted at 6o’clock. That’s something I experienced early on in my career as an entrepreneur, and where I was kind of logging in late hours in my 30s and staying up till 11 o’clock, midnight, 1am, and telling myself, “Hey, I’m getting more done. I’m super productive.” Yet I walked around kind of foggy and kind of exhausted and kind of burnt out by 3o’clock every day. As I kind of changed that pattern in life to more of a nine to five. I didn’t bed at nine and up at five. I’m kind of much sharper, and I’m not a morning person, but kind of much sharper, much more productive. This is kind of really just tying in this concept of Energy and the importance of recharging the body so it has what it needs to do the repair. I just want to kind of close that note out, which is kind of drilling home that the importance of the Energy Freedom to enjoy the other things you’ve been working so hard on.
