QUOTE: “City water is legal – but is it safe to drink?”

Riggs Eckelberry doesn’t look like a bomb-thrower. And yet, he’s driving the disruption of a trillion-dollar industry that has fallen behind the times and is affecting the health of millions. That industry is Big Water. Simply, those billion-dollar centralized water systems aren’t coping with demand, and water quality is getting worse. The answer? Instant InfrastructureTM. Businesses are doing their own water treatment, using modular, prefabricated systems that are trucked right on site. They get better water quality, lower rates through recycling, and even improved environmental grades! Ten years after launching public company OriginClear, Riggs and his team are offering those truck-in-place modular systems in the USA, while licensees are building products internationally using OriginClear’s low-energy, chemical-free innovation.

QUOTE: “Water is the new Gold!”

Riggs Eckelberry is uniquely qualified to ride the huge wave of do-it-yourself water treatment that is transforming an industry, having learned management in the nonprofit space, captained oceangoing ships, and achieved several tech successes during the dot-com boom.

Timestamped Show Notes:

00:30 – Introduction

10:00 – I was able to build real companies after that, I was involved with getting yellowpages.com its liquidity with my help. I wound up taking a company public called Cyber Defender.

20:00 – We became specialists and decentralized, meaning that our line of modular water systems. The black box thing really appeals to the decision-making decentralized user who just wants to solve the goddamn problem?

30:00 – He spent 30 years doing this stuff and we came along and say, okay, this is perfect to speed up the technology adoption cycle. Except that it’s still really hard to get projects through, even before the virus.

40:00 – The point, is that the investor normally has no way to get decent returns that are secure. By secure we mean, if you allow that water treatment plant to be built into the property, and now you become a claimant in a foreclosure or liquidation, then good luck, right? Major apartment networks are just falling apart because people aren’t paying their bills, and you don’t want to be the second or third or fourth in line on getting collection. So we realize it had to be something where we literally, it’s like running a TV, in the poor part of town, you want to be able to go in and take it.

50:00 – So what you have is, 20% overall, meaning in the US and the West, as Europeans, have it even better. It’s more like 70-80% is treated and then other countries are at 5% or zero, but guess what, it’s the same freakin ocean. So, you know, Bangladesh is doing whatever, well, it’s stuff makes its way over to us too. So we were on the same bubble, and we’ve got it too. So what I finally feel so good about is the fact that we’ve been able to take the limiters off and the blinders have been taken off the industry. This is a model that can be adopted.

59:45 – Final Words

Our Final Words of the Show:

It’s really interesting because I came up through the nonprofit space and so it was all about saving the world and then, in the 80s, I ended up in tech and the reason I ended up in tech was I started feeling that Tech has the potential to change the world, right?

For example, the self-driving car has the potential to eliminate that 14 fatalities per hundred thousand that we live with on a daily basis. It’s also a double-edged sword technology that can be used to surveil people, whatever, but it’s that net. I think we’re never going to get a handle on climate change. Without tech, it’s not gonna be done by legislating people to consume less. We have to literally leapfrog with technology and that’s why I went through the.com and then I found myself in water.

I feel that by applying the technology leapfrog to water, I can really help make a difference to the planet and that’s what makes me work the crazy hours and deal with the nuttiness because, like you, I feel like what I’m doing is so important. I love the excitement that people have, I feel it on a daily basis and it just keeps me going!

Peter Curtis Pardini is an award-winning director and producer. His critically acclaimed documentary Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago (which he also produced) won two film festivals and 4 awards on its way to 2 million viewers for its #1 rated premiere on CNN on New Year’s Day 2017. David Wild of Rolling Stone magazine hailed the documentary as “artful and definitive.”

In addition to Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago, Pardini has written, produced and directed over 10 short films, 3 feature documentaries and three narrative features. In his senior year at Cal State Northridge, his screenplay, The Benders, was awarded as the best screenplay for undergraduates at the school. He would then become the personal assistant to Robert Moresco, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of 2006 Best Picture winner Crash.

His first documentary feature, Chicago: World Tour 2011, was created and edited with Pardini acting as the one-man crew. It was screened nationwide via Fathom Events in December 2011, making Pardini the youngest director, at age 24, of 2011 to have a feature film screen in over 500 theaters.

He has also directed several music videos, worked as an editor for Red Bull, directed national television commercials for international tutoring giant Mathnasium and the band Chicago. He has worked/created material with the likes of The Doobie Brothers, Jim Caviezel, Adam Carolla, Joe Mantegna, Kyle Mooney, Al Pacino and the Notre Dame sports program.

His work has been featured on The Grammys, HBO, CNN, Parade Magazine, Deadline Hollywood and People Magazine.

He recently completed Rolling Thunder (story/director), a feature film shot in one day starring Wes Studi and Joe Mantegna. He is currently in post-production on Fat: A Documentary, a feature film about the history of health myths in the US and abroad.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

[00:30] Introduction

[10:00] People can break out of that mindset of one thing is causing my bad health. When you’re burning fat and you’re fat adapted. The fat is actually good for you and it gives you your fuel.

[20:00] When I had a regular nine to five job, I was saving money more than I am now or I was just watching my spending more. I was basically single, so I would just get those TV dinners thinking, well, there’s only 12 points in each of these. So I would have three a day and thought it was pretty amazing still maintaining or losing weight. That’s one of the things we talked about in the documentary, it is the fact that weight loss does not always mean good health.

[31:00] Movie’s and catering. It’s an unspoken rule, that even if your union, you just you have to be there for the crew. They can’t go out, they have to be in and set up all day long for the filming.

[40:00] My favorite argument against the ketogenic diet that, yes, it works, but after you stop it, you gain the weight back. That’s why you don’t stop it.

[50:00] The next time he saw me, he was at the Chicago show, and he came up to me. He said you look like you’ve lost weight since I saw you. I said, yeah. He asked what are you doing, what are you exactly eating? I said, meat, eggs, butter, coffee, water.

[01:07:00] Final Words

Final Words:

If you bought this movie and watched it, Thank You. Especially if you bought it and supported the project on Indiegogo too. If we can share this with as many people as possible, they’re going to watch it and they’re going to say, “Oh, my God”, like one of my friends did last night, “Is this true?!”

That’s what we want. We want people to watch it and say, I’ve never heard that before. Then they go and tell other people and then we can really make a change. Because in all honesty, like all documentaries, that’s what they are there for. To tell a story that people haven’t heard before, and it leads them to either changing their lives or helping to change other people’s lives. So I would just say continue to share it. If you don’t want to buy it, just rent it and watch it.
