Your host, Scott Mulvaney and today’s guest co-host Dr. John Neustadt discuss the importance of balancing health, business, and lifestyle. Dr. Neustadt, an expert in integrative medicine, emphasizes the impact of chronic stress on health, particularly cortisol’s role in bone loss and gut health. He advocates for personal responsibility in health, highlighting the inadequacy of traditional medical approaches. They discuss the benefits of whole foods, protein intake, and the pitfalls of ultra-processed foods. Dr. Neustadt’s company, NBI Health, focuses on high-quality supplements, particularly Vitamin K2 (MK-4) for bone health, which has shown to reduce fractures by over 70%. They stress the importance of reading labels and understanding bioavailability. The discussion focused on the differences between MK-4 and MK-7 forms of vitamin K2, highlighting that MK-4 has been clinically proven to stop and reverse bone loss, while MK-7 only slows down bone loss and may even increase it. Scott Mulvaney emphasized the importance of consumer education and informed decision-making. John Neustadt discussed the significance of clinical trials and the need for transparency in supplement marketing. They also touched on the benefits of vitamin C, the importance of genetic testing, and the role of dietary supplements in stress management and overall health. Neustadt shared his commitment to reducing fracture risk and improving bone health through evidence-based products and pro bono consulting.

Timestamped Show Notes:

08:46 – Chronic stress is absolutely devastating to your health. I mean, even the research has been done with cortisol levels and normal “healthy people”, and just the high end of normal, meaning that they were not pathological. They didn’t have any disease. They were losing bone mass faster than the people whose cortisol levels were lower. Cortisol also changes the gut microbiome. When it’s elevated a lot of the researchers with medications like prednisone, which is basically cortisol on steroids itself, and high doses, but even low doses of short term create osteoporosis and increase fracture risk. But they destroy muscle microfibrils, and it decreases your body’s ability to produce collagen. The stress also makes the collagen that is present there even more fragile. So it’s just this recipe for this systemic breakdown throughout your body of the connective tissue, not to mention the gut health, and, you know, it’s drag on your energy and damage to mitochondria.

13:15 – If recovering from all this chronic stress, if they’ve got symptoms of adrenal fatigue and or we’ve tested it and it’s shown it, I like to have them exercise just to the point where they are sweating and then to stop. That way you get the cardiovascular benefits. It gets the heart rate up, it boosts the immune system, but it doesn’t over stress the the adrenal glands any further.

17:30 – A really insidious effect of cortisol and that chronic stress research has shown it actually shrinks brain size. It decreases the volume of your brain.

37:52 – In Japan, they actually prescribe forest bathing, grounding, i.e. go out into nature. It’s prescribed. The other thing is when you’re in that stressful situation, back to cortisol in a stressful position in your house, or you’re just wound up, it changes the blood flow in your brain. Your prefrontal cortex is for decision making and being able to understand the results of your actions. So if this is comprimised, it will impact your ability to gauge which is going to be the best decision, it decreases the blood flow to that area, and it increases the blood flow to other areas of the brain, where it’s more fight or flight, where it’s let’s get out of here. In fact, research has shown that when people are under stress, they cannot anticipate how the negative consequences of their behaviors, because they just want to escape, and so they make worse decisions.

01:01:20 – Bioavailable, so, what does that mean? It means you can absorb it better, and that’s true, MK7 is more bioavailable than MK4, but that doesn’t mean that it works better in your body. Does that guarantee a utilization? Not at all. So MK7 and MK4 are both forms of Vitamin k2 but they’re different molecules. So you know, as we know, in biochemistry, if you change just one carbon atom or one atom on a molecule, you can get overlapping but you also get very different effects. So I already mentioned, MK4 has been shown to stop and reverse bone loss and maintain bone strength. MK7, in all doses tested, has never been shown to stop bone loss or reverse it, only slow down how fast somebody loses bone?

01:14:00 – On the topic of accurate supplement labeling, I love that topic, and that’s we have three versions of that product. Each have the highest dose of MK4 available, 45 milligrams per day, with 2000 I use a vitamin d3 the dose shown in clinical trials to work, and then different amounts of calcium, because not everybody needs the same amount of calcium in a dietary supplement, and a lot of people don’t even need calcium as a dietary supplement. So that’s got the full dose of calcium, 1000 milligrams per day. Take two servings a day, osteo K minis, which is, I think, a better formula for most women. It has less calcium. It has 400 milligrams per day, right next to that. And the osteo MK4 has no calcium, just the MK4 and vitamin d3 for people who don’t need extra calcium.

01:27:00 – Final Words

Our Final Words of the Show:

The reason I started, aside from getting frustrated by not having the supplements that I needed for my patients, where I started focusing on bone health and osteoporosis, is because my mother in law, at the time had osteoporosis. I thought I was doing a good job with her and my patients. I was, you know, helping her with some dietary supplements and nutrition and exercise advice. And her doctor had her on fossamax. Her physician her bone density was going up. So she was happy. Her physician was happy. I was happy. My patient’s bone density was going up. So I was happy. Then my mother in law fell, tripped on a throw rug and broke her hip. And I thought to myself, something is wrong with this picture. So I started diving into the research on osteoporosis and bone health, and I was shocked by what I found, that a bone density test only predicts 44% of women with osteoporosis who fracture only 21% of men, and yet that number on that test is almost exclusively what’s treated and tracked conventionally. And in fact, when it comes to the Osteoporosis medications, the change in bone density is not even an indicator that that medication is reducing their fracture risk that’s well documented in the clinical trials. And so my passion for continuing to research on osteoporosis and bone health, lecture at medical conferences, write my book, create products to help people support their their bone health and their physiology in that way, if I can have an overarching legacy when I’m when I’m gone, my hope is that it will move the needle nationally in terms of how clinically doctors approach this condition, and the entire focus of it changes from just being addressing a number on a test to what can we do to reduce people’s fracture risk, because that’s the most dangerous thing with this condition, and fracture risk depends largely, mostly on factors other than bone density.

Timestamped Show Notes:

13:40 – I would say you could call it desensitized, or you could call it discernment and adaptation. I’m in the business of helping people become better adapted to modern stress, which basically means they’re able to maintain your center right in as conditions all around you increase in chaos. You actually drop in more deeply because you have the ability to discern. Like, is this life and death for me, or is this an opportunity for me to, in your case, share the skills that you have inherently. I’m in the same way, like I’ve been out rock climbing and watched somebody fall and dislocate a leg, and I walk over and I’m like, okay, get them stable. Then we put their leg back into position. They’re like, how did you do that?

24:10 – That is actually stress release and recovery. So the emotion, like a person like you, I’m actually very similar in the way. I can show up in an emergency or in someone’s life that is going through chronic issues, like disease. I can show up with dozens of them around and so I’m just serving, serving, serving, serving, serving. I can stay really centered and grounded, because it’s what lights me up. This is what my nervous system, what I’ve groomed it to do.

53:50 – We teach people how to do this and teach movement. It’s called EDU Immersion, a practical spinal maintenance. Have a happy spine, calm, and I give out a free workshop on it. So you’ll learn about stress, the neurophysiology of stress, and then how to work with your system with movement. So I mentioned, whenever you stress out, you always lateralize into one hemisphere. Well, what’s beautiful about the body is that left hemisphere controls right side of the body and vice versa. So if I have a movement system that crosses my midline regularly, and what happens is it forces cross modal communication in the two hemispheres. So now those hemispheres are starting to compare data and go, wait, why are we in a stress state right now? You know based on what we’re seeing right now, there’s no bear out there. So you get to create congruence between the two hemispheres, the brain waves slow down into alpha and theta in the body to get that parasympathetic sympathetic balance. So that’s really why we have an online course for that as well, called Moving Back Into Balance.

01:0:50 – Final Words

Our Final Words of the Show:

One key point is that your body is brilliant. Your being is brilliant, like what you’re capable of is far beyond what you could ever even imagine. So this is an invitation for you to lean into that. Lean into that by getting outside, by talking nicely to yourself and asking good questions, by valuing yourself with good choices. We’re making choices every day, all day, and one of the biggest choices, I would say, is to start to see everything that’s happened in your life as on the way, rather than in the way. Because as you make that change, and you start to reflect on this conversation we’ve had today, you start to look at these things that you’ve thought, Damn, that was in the way. If you can start to shift and ask, how is it on the way? You start to, as my friend Dr. John Demartini says, you become no longer a victim of reality, but a master of destiny. You move from being a victim to whatever is happening to you, to recognize your creative powers, your self-authorship that you get to meet every moment, and you’re filling in that content. You’re the meaning maker. So if you just own that and bring the pen back in your hand and get out of the victimhood thing, you can do incredible things. Everyone has a value that’s equally valuable to everyone else, because we’re all on a unique journey here as a soul in the human body.

Timestamped Show Notes:

00:30 – Introduction

07:45 – I think what my passion and purpose, to answer your question, is that I went from being an elite athlete to, fatigued, tired, depressed, gained 30 pounds overnight, just lost everything I had as an athlete and I felt like it was overnight. But it wasn’t and so that’s kind of my purpose now. Educating that what happened to me could happen to you. Let’s stop it now before you ignore it five years later, and end up me years later, still can’t do that.

13:45 – That’s what I did when I wrote my book, it was more for my own therapy session. But what were my red flags that happened for probably the 10 years before my breakdown? That happened in March 2013 that led me to that day it worked up so I wasn’t aware of it so I had to go back in time till like high school and go back. Where are these things happening that I was so oblivious to? So that is kind of a task I give everyone I work with is like let’s go back and see what are your stressors you know, what are things that are triggers for you that activate that stress response and you know, we know we know that acute stress is good beneficial, but when it comes like non-stop but just never turns off that when it gets to be trouble for our bodies.

20:00 – So what would you say if I just filled you with macronutrients with vitamins and minerals and everything you need, instead of a pill. You know, get it from your food and it’s hard, I take ton of supplements, but it’s hard to get that from your food. But ideally, it’s food. I read Michael Pollan’s book forever go, and he has the best thing like food. You can read the ingredients list that your great grandmother had in her house

30:00 – When I have people on my show. It’s like, what’s your Why? What’s your drive and, you know, follow your passion, your purpose, and I feel like my purpose of going through eight years of health imbalances that I had, is so I help other people avoid going through what I have had and so it’s finding out why so for me to help other people what I’ve decided is, you know, I can’t solicit people but just you want them to come to you when they’re ready for help because being a functional practitioner now and focusing that as my main business is health coaching, being health detective is really investigating with functional labs and nutritional therapy and quarterly now together to create an individualized protocol to transform, rebuild, repair the whole you.

39:30 – I learned years ago that it does a lot of that stuff doesn’t get through your stomach acid so if it doesn’t like I use a megaspore for base probiotic that can actually bypass acidic that’s supposed to prevent you know the bad things were going through and so it certain things might not even get into your small intestine, large intestine, so it is quality, a lot of that stuff.

44:30 – I went over my hormone panel and my hormones right down at the bottom of the line that you should, and I was like, oh, man, I’m pretty good. That means I could be better and don’t settle for just how you are now that you could even be so much more energetic and happier and thriving. We all can be so much more. So why do we just settle for this, there’s so much more we can do.

50:00 – I just did labs as it just went through and I did this other lab and I keep testing people, you know, encouraging people to do lab testing. Because I didn’t know as I said, what my microbiome is about. I did a pathogen test, and it’s not good. So I might feel like I’m thriving and my immune system is super strong. But I know some people that got coronavirus, and we’re sick for two weeks and they’re active, they’re fit, they’re not overweight, but why did they get really sick from it?

58:41 – Final Words

Our Final Words of the Show:

I just think take ownership of your health for your body. You’ve got one body, you know, you do it for your car, you take your car in for repair, oil, lube change, you get new tires, getting alignment, etc. So why don’t we invest the amount of money we do on our cars to our own bodies? I don’t get it.
