Scott Mulvaney welcomes todays guest co-host, Dr. Torkil Færø, a freelance doctor from Norway with 26 years of experience. They discuss the importance of health, lifestyle balance, and technology in disease prevention and management. Dr. Færø emphasizes the role of wearables in monitoring health metrics like heart rate, stress levels, and sleep patterns. He shares his personal journey of losing 40 pounds and improving his health after his father’s death. They also touch on the limitations of traditional medical education and the potential of technology to empower individuals to take control of their health. Torkil’s book, “The Pulse Cure,” has been a success in Norway, focusing on heart rate variability and stress management. Scott and Dr. Færø discuss the benefits of heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring, particularly through wearable technology. Mulvaney shares his interest in using HRV to help his wife, a former on-call doctor, improve her sleep and circadian rhythm. Dr. Faarvaer highlights the application of HRV in veterinary medicine and with handicapped children. They emphasize the importance of personalized health management, noting that HRV data can reveal stress levels and improve self-awareness. Dr. Færø also mentions the feedback from thousands of users on Instagram, supporting the book’s findings. They agree on the value of wearable technology in empowering individuals to take control of their health.

Your Co-Host Today:

Dr Torkil Færø is a GP and emergency physician, documentary filmmaker, author and photographer. Over a 26-year career as a freelance doctor, he has worked all over Norway, had hundred thousand consultations and thus gained a unique picture of the diseases that plague us. He learned that the cause is most often found in the stresses our lifestyles place on our bodies. When his father died at 73, he realized that he had to change his own lifestyle. Being 40 pounds overweight, under-trained, over-stressed, under-slept and drinking alcohol daily, he learned that this lifestyle could deprive him of decades. Using wearables he found a way to track and regulate his nervous system and physiology.

Today’s Top 3 Takeaways:

Heart rate tracking, stress, and wearable technologies.

Individualized health in regards to personal accountability.

The role of HRV tracking and the future of health and technology integrations.

Timestamped Show Notes:

18:45 – Now we can use the technology on ourselves. That is just a major shift in the power in the healthcare system, where you take the power from the hospitals and the doctors and the different practitioners and you put it into your own hand. You have control with the wearables, with smart watches, with smart rings like Oura. Keeping track of the heart rate, your pattern of movement, the temperatures and your oxygen levels that these can track, and you get the control of your health.

30:45 – According to Whoop, like the Whoop band on my on my right arm here, they are gathering health information from their users. By far, the worse stresser is alcohol, and that is what I used to drink. I was thinking it was calming me down, helping me to sleep, but the sleep is just terrible under the influence of alcohol.

01:02:00 – I have some of the grounding aka earthing topic in my book that is out now in Norway, called The Rest Cure. Discussing stress, it’s about exercise, it’s about sleep, it’s about active rest, how you can calm yourself down. That seems to be the hardest thing for people. So that is why my publisher wanted a book only on the rest part of The Pulse Cure. That actually became a larger book than The Post Cure on 250 pages exploring how you can rest and what you do with the wearables so you can measure your rest. You may be thinking that you’re resting, but the wearable health tech will show that you have either been eating something you cannot tolerate, or you have been stressing so much that your body can’t get into the parasympathetic state, even if you think you’re relaxing. So that is why it’s important to also have this measurable rest that you can see on your watches or rings that your heart rate is in the parasympathetic mode.

01:25:00 – Final Words

Our Final Words of the Show:

The message would have to be that you are in more control of your health than maybe you think, and that it is easier to do it with feedback from wearables. I would end with the first words in my book, The Pulse Cure, it’s from Albert Schweitzer, the doctor who says, the doctor of the future will be yourself. So now we’re kind of already there. We have we can have control, and we can be our own doctors.

The hosts today discuss the common issue of headaches and the role of chiropractic care. Dr. Vrzal, a chiropractor with over 30 years of experience, shares his personal journey with headaches and his advocacy for drug-free, holistic solutions. He explains the seven specific headache patterns linked to various organs and the importance of listening to the body. Dr. V emphasizes the role of nutrition, supplementation, and stress management in maintaining health. He also highlights the limitations of traditional medicine and the benefits of functional medicine and biohacking. The conversation underscores the need for personal accountability in health and the value of integrative approaches. Dr. V discusses the connection between physical symptoms like upper trap tension and sacroiliac pain with underlying health issues such as blood sugar problems and yeast infections. They emphasize the importance of listening to one’s body and being an advocate for one’s health to improve quality of life. Dr. V suggests that if one were to see the future consequences of poor health choices, like eating sugar and grains, it would be a powerful motivator to change behavior. They also mention that certain foods, like corn, can trigger health problems like cortisol dumping and ovarian cysts. Scott agrees, noting the impact of inflammatory responses on joint pain and the importance of sharing health knowledge through their podcast. They both stress the significance of being proactive in health management and the enduring value of educational content.

Quote: “Headaches are the unseen foes in our daily lives, striking unexpectedly yet universally.”

Dr. Scott Vrzal, driven by constant debilitating headaches in his youth, was cured by a Chiropractor. He pursued a career in the same discipline inspired by the change. Initially misdiagnosed and advised to consult a psychiatrist due to the pain, he embarked on a mission to understand headaches’ root causes. With over 30 years of expertise, Dr. Vrzal refines pain patterns, advocates drug-free and holistic solutions, and shares his methods to a healthier lifestyle. His thriving practice reflects a personal commitment to health, performance, and relieving patients’ pain.

Today’s Top 3 Takeaways:

Pay attention to how your body responds to each meal, identify trigger foods.

Experiment with eliminating inflammatory foods like factory chicken, tomatoes, peppers (night shades), and grains.

Stablize blood sugar through your focus on diet and exercise to improve focus, sleep, and overall health.

Timestamped Show Notes:

02:00 – Headaches are a hot subject for me, I got into it bcause of my headaches and my my lust for performance. I was a natural bodybuilder at the time and I’d get pounding headaches every time I did bench press.

10:30 – If the pec or clavicular muscle is not firing properly, we look at stomach function. If they have a low back pain in the flank area, we look at large intestine function. So when we we identify what the primary weakness is, and that’s the beauty of of headaches for me, I’ll circle back to that. But again, every muscle has associated organs. When we find these organ dysfunctions, these weaknesses, then we look at, is it a structural need or structural compromise that’s compromised in the muscle?

15:10 – It could be that you’re drinking your water out of a plastic bottle and you’re getting the estrogenic effects from from the plastics. It’s because at one of those pathways in the liver, we were just referring to, like your glutathione pathway. Maybe that’s not breaking the hormones down properly and it’s setting you up for this type of headache. So I would suspect when you’re currently on your your glutathione products, that you’re proably going to be a lot less likely to have those types of headaches.

26:15 – We want to keep the keep the toxic metals out, which means pesticides and that sort of stuff. So eating the organic vegetables, getting those, you know, grains are all adulterated. They have that Roundup influence, the glyphosate in there that compromises gallbladder function, which is why the right sided headache is the most common type of headache in America.

37:15 – When we’re stuck in that state, then we get the frontal headaches. We have compromised the stomach lining. You know, cortisol is a catabolic hormone, ultimately, and which means it breaks the body down. It’s going to break down muscle. So certainly, when we’re over training, we’re breaking down muscle. We need to then heal up and recover properly. So that frontal headache means that you’re not managing that, the body’s not managing the stress hormones properly, and it’s going to manifest as a frontal.

Download and Listen to the rest of our show!

01:00:00 – Final Words

Our Final Words of the Show:

It’s about changing the way people perceive health and what their body is trying to tell them pain is, I mean, with the applied kinesiology that the approach to healthcare that I use, it’s very, very, very evident that every, not you know, fibromyalgia, is 25 different pain patterns, or you know, different things like that, every not tells a story. So my I’m here to try to empower you the listener, to listen to what that pain is telling you. Any I mean, upper trap tension is typically a blood sugar problem, tent pain and the weakness and weak, weakness on the side of the neck, blood sugar feeding yeast, and that’ll manifest as sacroiliac pain, or low back, you know, tailbone kind of pain. So all of those have it tell a story, and I made it my, my life’s mission to, you know, any you know, Scott points to somewhere, you know here, I know, okay, that’s a lung issue, oh, that’s a gallbladder issue, that’s an adrenal issue, and I can go right to it, and then then there’s specific food triggers or lifestyle issues that are going to cause that.

So my whole thing, my my MO at this point, my legacy is listen to your body. It’s trying to tell you a story and be your own advocate. To identify what that is. Quality of life goes up, you know, the quantity of years. But even more importantly, the quality of those years exponentially changes. I’ve often said the best practice management tool I could have would be a crystal ball, you know. You know, Scott, you quit eating, you know, sugar, sugar and grains. This is how you’re, you know, you’re going to look in feel in 80 years. You know, you quit eating, you keep eating your sugar and grains. This is how you’re going to look and feel if you make it another 30 years, you know. So I mean, that would be the best motivating tool we could have. But pain is, is kind of that crystal ball to help us understand, oops, these choices are compromising my health. So let’s learn from them. Let’s be our best advocate that’s going to inspire their doctors. You know, the listener, your doctor, is going to potentially shift their paradigm as they recognize you figuring these things out. Then they’re going to tell the next person you know, hey, just you know, Scott quit eating sugar, and his neck pain went away. What about you?
